Yalta, a wonderful resort in the south of the Crimean peninsula, Ukraine... There are people who have no idea where the Crimea is, there are people who have no idea that the Crimea even exists but everyone has heard about Yalta.

For the older generation Yalta is the place where the Crimean Conference was held in 1945, they remember this important and dramatic event from the end of World Wae II. The younger generation has usually heard something about the former Soviet Union and the name Yalta. But all people who heard about Yalta at least once know it is a nice and most famous resort area on the shore of the beautiful Black Sea. And it is true!

Yalta was founded a long time ago by ancient Greeks. Actually, there are two "Yaltas" - Greater Yalta and Yalta City. Yalta City is Yalta itself, but Greater Yalta is several small nice towns that form sort of Crimean Riviera. Yalta City is surrounded by high mountains, that's why it is always warm there, the climate is subtropical of Mediterranean type.

In Yalta you can find lots of restaurants that serve dishes of Russian, Ukrainian, Tatar and international cuisine, cafes, bars and night clubs. The main promenade is always full of people walking forward and back, artists, singers and performers.

Yalta is a pretty expensive city - the average prices are close to Western standards. Many restaurants and shops accept credit cards (Visa and MasterCard), and ATM's are also available.

How to Get to Yalta
If you get to the Crimea by plane or train, you have to go through Simferopol where there's an international airport and a railway station. Then you should go by bus or minibus. The cost will be about $3.00 and take you about 2 hours. You can also take a trolleybus. The trolleybus line Simferopol-Yalta is the longest in the world, the journey will take 2.5 hours for only $1.00 and you'll thoroughly enjoy it. You can go by taxi as well. If you are lucky, you'll find an English-speaking driver. In general, to travel by taxi is safe but, of course, nobody could give you insurance!..
